  • Beginner’s Day

    Beginner’s Day is designed to introduce new users to WordPress. WordCamp volunteers will teach you how to use prepare your site locally using Desktop Server on your computer so you’ll be ready for the weekend.

    Schedule

    • 9am – Welcome & Introduction with Josh Knapp
    • 9:15am – What is WordPress?
    • 9:45am – Introduction to Local Development Using Desktop Server with Gregg Franklin
    • 10:30am – The Block Post Editor
    • 11:30am – Choosing  and Installing a Theme
    • 12:15pm – Break*
    • 12:30pm – Choosing and Installing Plugins
    • 1pm – Securing your website
    • 1:30pm – Deploying and Hosting your website

    What you should bring

    To get the most out of Beginner’s Day, you should bring a modern Mac or Windows laptop and power cable and install Desktop Server before attending Beginner’s Day.  The free limited version will work for what we will cover.

    Things to consider

    Desktop Server’s Minimum System Requirements

    • Windows 7, 8, 10
    • Macintosh OS X 10.10.X to 10.14.X. 
    • At least 500 megabytes of free hard drive space for installation. 

    Desktop Server will not run on a mobile device such as an iPad, Android tablet or smartphone.


    *Lunch will not be provided during Friday’s session. We will provide snacks but you may want to bring a packed lunch.

    Issa has owned a recording studio, founded a record label, toured the world in a punk band, and launched an MTV star. Luckily he was also a lifelong computer nerd and 15 years ago turned his coding side-gig into a full time profession. He has built the backend systems powering various news websites, and recently founded OutVoice, a system for paying freelance content creators.

    After spending most of my life as a developer, I got into WordPress about 2 years ago. Having been a PHP developer since the it was created, WordPress has been a natural fit. I have thoroughly enjoyed being part of the WordPress Community, so I thought it was my time to give back. My hobbies are gardening, gemstones and as you can tell by my perfect build, I used to be a professional bowler.

    Sabrina Liao

    Sabrina Liao has a passion for all things creative, fun and challenging. She has worked at a top agency on global brands in Asia as the Creative Director. Her work consists of UX research and educating future designers/developers at universities and providing digital solutions to Fortune 500 companies as well as government agencies.

    She has an extensive background in music, published seven books in Technology, life in New York City and Chinese Astrology, and also an avid tennis player/Federer fan. She looks forward to meeting, sharing and learning from other WordPress enthusiasts at WordCamps Worldwide. Sabrina is scheduled to speak at WordCamp Taipei in December 2019.

    Scott Tambling owns and operates Desert Digital Design, a small agency in the greater Palm Springs area specializing in WordPress websites. He has 20+ years of experience in web design and began using WordPress exclusively since he started his business 10 years ago. His background in sales and marketing along with polished communication skills has helped him develop a solid client portfolio and generate significant recurring revenue managing sites he has already built. He believes that the most important part of his success as a website designer is not in his technical skill set, but in his ability to attain, thrill and ultimately retain a client for life.

    Sean Conklin

    Sean has been a full-stack PHP web developer since 2002. He’s been specializing in WordPress powered sites since 2011 and WooCommerce powered shops since early 2017. By day Sean is Founder at Coded Commerce, LLC where he builds and supports dozens of WooCommerce powered stores. By night Sean co-organizes and speaks at the West Valley WordPress Meetup and the WooCommerce Los Angeles Meetup, as well as attends various Southern California WordPress Meetup events.

    Amber Hewitt is the founder of Graphicgoo, a full-service graphics partner specializing in graphic design and front-end web development. As a designer, website expert, and social media master, she helps businesses navigate and break through the clutter by telling their unique stories through the lens of their own brand and brand goals.

    Amber has a BFA in Graphic Design from ArtCenter College of Design and since graduating has gained 15 years of experience in an ever changing industry. In that time, her career has given her the opportunity to truly develop a passion for brand development, UI/UX design, typography, and all things design related.

    David Mayne is the Digital Strategist and COO for PIMedia LLC (pimedia.me), a Las Vegas digital marketing agency.

    He has extensive experience as a WordPress designer (2009) and he is certified in multiple marketing technologies. His career began in corporate computing and business application development. Today, he leads his team in website design and strategy for business marketing with WordPress at the core. He works with startups and companies that need a “Digital Marketing Turn Around”. David is a creative thinker and very entertaining presenter.

    Founder of WebSearchPros. I have 12 years of experience in online marketing. I worked for a large Yellow Page company for 10 years and launched Web Search Pros 7 years ago.

    We have built over a thousand of websites and ranked hundreds of sites for thousands of phrases to page 1 of Google. We specialize in building websites that meet W.C.A.G 2.1 AA standards. This means sites that work for those with disabilities and help protect businesses from lawsuits and increase their reach. I am a member of the International Association of Accessibility Professionals.

    Joe A Simpson Jr.

    During sun-soaked days he works at Metro LA, one of the largest transit agencies in the country, fighting the good fight to ease gridlock around Los Angeles County. When their lead developer and CSS specialist both left to pursue other opportunities, Joe inherited a Headway-themed design (sans child theme) and the rest is history. Over ten years later, he manages a WordPress blog network consisting of dozen project-specific or transit news sites and growing. Joe actively contributes to the WordPress Community, founding the WordPress Santa Clarita Valley Meetup, speaking, organizing or volunteering at WordCamps.

WordCamp Riverside is sending out a call for volunteers to make 2019 our best conference yet.

Organizers can’t make it happen without your help. We rely on the generosity from our community and volunteers play an invaluable role in assisting attendees, helping us create a fun and friendly event.

Volunteers receive a ticket to the event along with a WordCamp Riverside t-shirt and are invited to attend our speaker, organizer and volunteer dinner leading up to the event.
